Indian coffee has been part of global trade since the 17th century. Yet today, in the world of specialty coffee, Indian origin coffees remain under-appreciated or altogether left out of the story. Walk into a café in Singapore, London, or Melbourne, and you’ll see Ethiopia, Colombia, or Panama on the menu. Rarely do you find the incredible microlots from Chikmagalur or fruit-forward naturals from Coorg.

For too long, Indian coffee has been typecast as Monsooned Malabar - often just to check a box rather than as a daily showcase - or "fine robusta", blended quietly into espressos. But coffee estates in India are rewriting this story. What makes them distinct is the growing environment: virtually all the coffee here is grown under a dense canopy of shade trees, intercropped with black pepper, cardamom, mandarin oranges, and jackfruit. This isn't a marketing story from the fourth wave; it's the farming system in practice here for generations. Through time-tested traditional as well as exciting experimental processes, these estates are producing coffees with incredible complexity — floral and fruity notes, layered sweetness, and cupping scores that surprise.
